The American Volkssport Association (AVA) America's Walking Club was established in the United States in 1976 as a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization.  You can participate in sanctioned events in any member country to receive credit toward the awards program.

Volkssporting (sport of the people) is an adventure in health, recreation, fellowship and fun.  It consists of several different kinds of noncompetitive events, including walking, swimming, biking and cross country skiing. The Volkssporting philosophy recognizes that everyone who participates is a winner and is eligible for an award as described in the event ads.

The basic event is a 10 kilometer (6.2 mile) walk and can be longer but there is usually a 5k route for those requiring a short route.  Each event is sanctioned by the AVA and specific guidelines for safety and accessibility must be followed. To help people understand the degree of difficulty of any event, the events (except for swims) are graded for difficulty with 1 being the easiest and 5 the most difficult.

Clubs have the option of allowing participants to do their event for FREE.  But to receive credit, you must have an AVA record book for credit in distance or number of events or both.  These books are stamped when an event is completed and when the proper number are logged, the books are sent to the AVA Headquarters for processing.

Achievement awards consisting of a patch, pin and certificate are returned to the participant for motivation to further activity.
